Negotiations on relations between Britain and the EU after Brexit will begin on March 3

The UK-EU relationship agreement after Brexit must be signed before the end of the transition period ending December 31, 2020
Without an agreement on further cooperation between the UK and the European Union, to be signed before December 31, 2020, there is the prospect of a “tough Brexit” in many sectors without the possibility of a “return to the status quo,” notes The Guardian.

Negotiations on relations between the UK and the European Union after Brexit will begin on March 3, the British newspaper The Guardian reported January 29, citing its own sources.

According to The Guardian, Great Britain will leave the European Union on January 31, but until December 31 of the current year, while the transition period will continue, the United Kingdom will remain in a single market and customs space with the EU.

Further economic relations between Britain and the European Union should be negotiated between the EU representative, French diplomat Michel Barnier and British Prime Minister Advisor to the United Kingdom, Boris Johnson, on European issues, David Frost.

According to the publication, the main topics for discussion will be fishing and the EU requirement for “equal playing conditions” for British and European companies. In addition, Brussels requires guarantees that London will not receive an exclusive competitive advantage.

Referring to a senior European official, the publication notes that “the EU will play hard.” According to the interlocutor of the publication, Brussels “can enter into a discussion about the minimum level of standards [cooperation], but will not make the slightest movement to show that it needs it.”

The EU’s internal document, cited by the British publication, says that without a deal on these issues until the end of 2020, there is the possibility of a “tough Brexit” in many sectors without the prospect of a “return to the status quo.”

In June 2016, a referendum was held in the UK on the country's exit from the European Union. This decision was then supported by 51.9% of the British. The release date was set for March 29, 2019.

The British Parliament was unable to agree on the terms of Brexit in time, so it was postponed several times.

On December 20, 2019, the House of Commons of Great Britain supported the Brexit agreement , according to which the country should leave the European Union on January 31, 2020. For the time being, the UK will formally leave the EU, as the country will lose representation and voting rights in the EU authorities, but will remain part of a single economic space until the end of 2020.

On January 9, 2020, the House of Commons finally approved the Brexit terms . The House of Lords approved the bill of Prime Minister Boris Johnson on January 22.

On January 23, the bill on the country's exit from the European Union was signed by Queen Elizabeth II of Great Britain.

On January 24, in Brussels, the President of the European Council, Charles Michel, and the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Layen, signed an agreement on Britain's withdrawal from the European Union.

The agreement is expected to ratify the European Parliament on January 29.
